“The Weed That Won the West” | National Geographic Magazine | December, 2013When National Geographic assigned us to do a feature on the presence of super weeds in America, we made a counter proposal—to do a story solely about tumbleweeds. That great tumbling icon of the west was not even of American origin, and we suspected that not many knew that. In the 1870’s some Russian Thistle seeds hitchhiked their way to a farmland in South Dakota, and in a mere thirty years spread to every western state.
